IndiGo Co-Founder Rakesh Gangwal Pledges Additional ₹300 Crore to IIT Kanpur for Medical School Project
IndiGo co-founder and IIT Kanpur alumnus Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore via a matching grant toward the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, bringing his total contribution to ₹400 crore.
In a monumental boost to medical education and infrastructure in India, IndiGo co-founder and IIT Kanpur alumnus Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional ₹300 crore toward the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology.
The fresh commitment brings Gangwal's cumulative contribution to the institution to ₹400 crore, following an initial donation of ₹100 crore made in 2022 to kickstart the medical school project.
Unlike conventional donations, Gangwal's latest ₹300 crore pledge is structured as a matching grant. Under this framework, he will match financial contributions made by other alumni, philanthropists, and supporters up to ₹300 crore. The strategy is explicitly designed to draw wider donor support and build a collaborative funding ecosystem for the ambitious healthcare project.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is engineered to be an interdisciplinary institution, merging IIT Kanpur's core strengths in science, technology, and engineering with modern medical research.
The broader developmental roadmap for the medical school campus includes:
- A fully integrated 500-bed super-speciality hospital
- A proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre
- Advanced academic programs focused on futuristic medicine and MedTech innovation
IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal expressed profound gratitude for the continuous support, noting that while the initial 2022 funding successfully set the institute's plans into motion, this substantial new backing will accelerate the realization of the vision. Describing his association with the project, Gangwal called it an honor and a privilege to be part of a first-of-its-kind medical institution bridging clinical practice and technical innovation.
