Stripe Reportedly Acquires AI Gateway Startup OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

Payments giant Stripe has reached a reported agreement to acquire artificial intelligence platform OpenRouter for a valuation exceeding $7 billion. The multi-billion-dollar deal represents a rapid valuation leap for the startup, which had raised a $113 million Series B round at a $1.3 billion valuation just months prior.

Founded in 2023 and led by CEO Alex Atallah, OpenRouter functions as a centralized gateway that allows developers to access, compare, and route requests across more than 400 different artificial intelligence models. By offering a single interface to models from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others, OpenRouter enables businesses to optimize costs, route around provider outages, and avoid strict vendor lock-in.

The platform has grown rapidly amid surging enterprise demand, serving millions of developers building model-intensive applications and autonomous AI agents.

For Stripe, the acquisition serves as a strategic move to stretch its infrastructure footprint well beyond traditional payment processing. By integrating OpenRouter's model selection, routing, and billing capabilities, Stripe positions itself at the core of the transaction and infrastructure layer powering the AI economy.

While representatives for Stripe declined to comment on the unconfirmed negotiations, and OpenRouter has not publicly commented, industry insiders note that the deal underscores the skyrocketing value of middleware that helps enterprises navigate multi-model AI deployment.
