SpaceX Closes $60 Billion Acquisition of AI Coding Startup Cursor

SpaceX has officially completed its multi-billion-dollar acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor (developed by Anysphere), locking in a monumental deal that integrates the popular developer tool directly into Elon Musk’s growing artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The transaction, which follows an initial partnership announced in April and a formal agreement structured in June, unites SpaceX’s expanding technological infrastructure with one of the most widely used AI coding assistants in the industry.

Even prior to the official closing, engineering teams from both entities had already established deep operational synergies. Cursor previously utilized trillions of data tokens alongside SpaceX AI researchers to co-develop Grok 4.5—marking a milestone as Cursor's first foundation model built beyond strictly software engineering use cases. This joint effort quickly extended into the joint refinement and release of Grok 4.6.

A primary growth driver behind the partnership has been Cursor’s access to Colossus, SpaceX’s massive supercomputing infrastructure powered by 200,000 Nvidia GPUs. Previously constrained by computational bottlenecks, Cursor leveraged this colossal processing capacity to significantly scale up its machine-learning training pipelines.

The culmination of the merger has already begun trickling down to consumer and enterprise offerings. SpaceX recently rolled out Grok Bot, an advanced AI agent system, extending early access to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers alongside Cursor Ultra and Premium Teams plan holders.

With the transaction officially complete, Cursor now operates alongside Grok Build, Grok Bot, and the Grok API as part of the core SpaceXAI organization, aimed at accelerating the development of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
