53 Years, 1.8 Million Jobs, 1,200 Startups: IIM Bangalore's Alumni Association Puts a Number on One Institution's Economic Impact on India
The IIM Bangalore Alumni Association has revealed that IIMB alumni have collectively created 1.8 million jobs and funded over 1,200 startups - figures that place one of India's premier B-schools among the country's most significant engines of economic creation, entrepreneurship, and employment generation over its 53-year history.
When IIM Bangalore was founded in 1973 on a 105-acre campus on Bannerghatta Road, its mandate was to produce management professionals for a newly liberalising Indian economy. Fifty-three years later, the institution's alumni association has put a number on what that mandate has produced: 1.8 million jobs created and over 1,200 startups funded - a measure of economic impact that few institutions anywhere in the world can claim at equivalent scale.
The figures were released by the IIM Bangalore Alumni Association (IIMBAA), offering the most comprehensive accounting yet of the institution's downstream contribution to India's economy, startup ecosystem, and employment landscape.
A Network That Built India's Consumer Economy
The names embedded in IIMB's alumni rolls read like a who's who of Indian business over the past three decades. Vipul Parekh co-founded BigBasket, India's largest online supermarket. Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal built Flipkart - the company that defined India's e-commerce era before its $16 billion acquisition by Walmart in 2018. Deep Kalra built MakeMyTrip into the country's dominant online travel platform.
These are the headline names. The 1,200 startups and 1.8 million jobs figure encompasses thousands of less-celebrated but equally consequential companies built by IIMB graduates across manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, agritech, and deeptech - many of them in cities and sectors far from the Bengaluru startup corridor that gets the most attention.
The Incubation Engine: NSRCEL
Central to IIMB's startup output is the Nadathur S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, widely regarded as the leading business incubator among all IITs and IIMs in India. NSRCEL has supported hundreds of startups across its programmes, with a particular focus on women entrepreneurs, social enterprises, and deep-tech ventures, providing mentorship, funding access, and market linkages that extend well beyond what a typical B-school incubator offers.
IIMB alumni have founded 1,104 companies that have raised a total of $11.6 billion across 1,321 funding rounds, with six active unicorns among them. The most active years for company formation were 2015 and 2016. Most alumni-founded startups are in India, followed by the United States.
What 1.8 Million Jobs Means
The 1.8 million jobs number is not a placement figure - it is an impact figure. It counts the employment generated by companies that IIMB alumni built, funded, or led - a compounding of individual career decisions into a collective economic outcome that spans agriculture to artificial intelligence, kirana stores to global SaaS platforms.
For a country where quality job creation remains one of the most urgent policy challenges, the ability of a single institution to trace a direct line to 1.8 million livelihoods is a powerful argument for sustained investment in premier management education.
IIMB is currently expanding its physical campus and deepening its research and entrepreneurship programmes, with a growing emphasis on AI, sustainability, and public policy. The 1,200 startups and 1.8 million jobs are, by any measure, an extraordinary legacy. They are also a baseline - the starting point for what the next generation of IIMB alumni builds in an economy undergoing its most significant technological transformation since liberalisation.
