PhonePe Ventures into Micro-Drama with Instagram-Led Series 'Passport Laapata'
Fintech giant PhonePe makes its debut in the trending micro-drama space with 'Passport Laapata,' an Instagram-first episodic series centered on a high-stakes travel mishap.
Fintech leader PhonePe has officially entered the micro-drama space with the launch of its first Instagram-led episodic series, titled 'Passport Laapata.' The move marks a strategic shift for the brand, as it joins a growing league of companies utilizing short-form, narrative-driven content to engage digital-first audiences.
The series opens with an episode titled "Farewell party gone wrong," which sets the stage for a tense narrative. The plot revolves around a group of friends who wake up with no memory of the previous night’s events, only to discover that the protagonist, Sid, has lost his passport—just nine hours before his scheduled international flight to the US.
By weaving suspense, humor, and themes of friendship into a bite-sized format, PhonePe aims to move beyond traditional advertisements and influencer-led posts. The episodic structure encourages recurring viewership, as audiences remain hooked on the unfolding mystery of the missing passport and the group’s frantic efforts to retrace their steps.
Kanika Marwaha, Head of Social Media at PhonePe, Indus App, and PhonePe Payment Gateway, took to LinkedIn to celebrate the launch. “We've just gone live with our very first micro-drama on PhonePe Instagram, and I'm so excited to finally share it,” she wrote, crediting her team and agency partners for the creative execution.
This foray into micro-dramas reflects a broader trend in Indian digital marketing. Brands such as OnePlus, Angel One, realme, and Mahindra Finance have previously leveraged episodic storytelling to explain complex products or drive cultural engagement. With 'Passport Laapata,' PhonePe is testing the efficacy of long-form episodic storytelling to build deeper brand affinity in an increasingly crowded social media landscape.
